  • Thinking About Plastic Surgery? Here Are 5 Reasons to Think Again

Thinking About Plastic Surgery? Here Are 5 Reasons to Think Again

Most people want to look their best. For celebrities, appearance is even more important. Many famous people turn to plastic surgery as their youthful visage starts to fade, but sometimes things go horribly wrong.

Today, plastic surgery techniques have come a long way from where they were a few decades ago.

Some of the early pioneers of modern plastic surgery cut corners and their patients paid the price. It’s hard to know how to feel about some of these celebrities, most of whom clearly took risks with their bodies for simple vanity.

Here are some of the most dramatic examples of plastic surgery gone terribly wrong. It’s probably OK to feel a little sorry for these celebrities, as some of them didn’t have the easiest lives. They all suffered for beauty, and never got what they paid for.

    1. Pete Burns

Pete Burns had a lifelong fascination with plastic surgery, by his own admission. Although he passed away recently, Burns spent most of his later life fighting against lip injections that were a horrendous mistake.

The lead singer and founder of the 80s pop group ‘Dead or Alive’ spent most of his fortune on repairing the lip-job gone rogue, before recovering £450,000 from Dr. Maurizio Viel via an out-of-court settlement.

Dr. Maurizio Viel had injected Pete Burns’ lips with a concoction of his own invention, which ended up being extremely toxic. As the injections spread throughout his face, he developed painful, pus-filled blisters that would explode unexpectedly.

Some of the doctors he saw thought that lip amputation was the only option, but he was able to find an Italian plastic surgeon who saved his face. Eventually, things returned to relative normality for Pete Burns, but he learned a painful lesson about experimental plastic surgeries that cost a fortune.

    2. Michael Jackson

Growing up as Joe Jackson’s son in Gary, Indiana probably wasn’t easy.

It wouldn’t do justice to the physical and psychological abuse that Michael Jackson suffered to gloss over the highlights, but this ‘obituary‘ for old Joe from The Guardian does a decent job at listing his catalog of horrors.

Regardless of what ’caused’ Michael to pursue a plastic surgery program that transformed him from a dark-skinned African-American, into a, well, very light-skinned person who could best be described as ‘androgynous’, he certainly did it.

One thing that is probably simple to explain in psychological terms is the nose that Michael ended up with. His father liked to call him “big nose” when he was young, after finding out that Michael was self-conscious about it.

Curiously, Michael was also diagnosed with discoid lupus erythematosus. Dermatologist Richard Stricksaid said that he:

“could see the disease had destroyed nose cartilage, which might have explained some of Michael’s plastic surgery.”

Michael was also severely injured by fire during the production of a 1984 Pepsi commercial, which forced him to receive skin grafts on his face. All that said, he probably did some of that cosmetic surgery for ‘personal’ reasons.

    3. Renee Zellweger

Unlike the rest of the people on this list, Renee Zellweger may or may not have been altered surgically for cosmetic reasons. Many people think that she has, and she has been pretty touchy on the subject.

There is irony in the fact that a public personality would be offended by the scrutiny that is sure to come with fame, especially if they make their millions by appearing in feature films.

Renee Zellweger is worth around $60 million USD, and you can guess where she made the money!

So, let’s leave the question of whether or not Renee had cosmetic surgery open, and say that if she did, she was able to afford the best people for the job, and pay them well enough to keep quiet.

    4. Joan Van Ark

Nothing lasts forever, except the chemicals that were apparently injected into Joan Van Ark’s face.

To be fair to the actress, she was born in the 1940s and probably hated to see what the ravages of time do to beauty. There is, of course, no way to stop the aging process. She did try, which left her with a face that probably isn’t what she bargained for.

Depending on which celebrity blog one reads, a laundry list of cosmetic procedures is alleged as the reason for Joan’s current appearance. She is also 75 years old, so we should probably cut her some slack.

    5. Michaela Romanini

Why do attractive people think that jamming odd substances in their face will make them better looking?

Michaela Romanini was something akin to Italy’s Paris Hilton. Famous for being rich, and well connected to other famous people.

Then she got addicted to collagen injections or something. Whatever she going on in her head had a dramatic effect on her appearance, and now she looks like an extraterrestrial clown.

Finding out exactly what she did to herself is probably difficult, but whatever it was. It didn’t do anything to help her beauty. Hopefully Michaela Romanini’s experience with plastic surgery will act as a warning to other celebrities!

  • “Uber” for Football Tailgating Is Making Millions Across the Nation

“Uber” for Football Tailgating Is Making Millions Across the Nation

Football tailgating is practically a religion for many fans. It’s a blast to hang out before a game with your friends and enjoy great food with other refreshments.

The Tailgate Guys saw an overlooked business opportunity in one collegiate campus and grew it into a nationally known business that is raking in the cash.

It’s a ton of work to put on a great tailgate party.

Parker Duffey was a construction project manager in Alabama who saw a waiting market a decade ago. He and his friend took out a $30,000 USD loan to get Tailgate Guys off the ground, but according to Parker, they only needed $5,000 USD to get up and running.

    Tailgating Is a Blast

Parker Duffey went to the University of Alabama, in Auburn, before taking up work in construction. His business partner Michael Otwell also found work in the building industry, as a salesman for construction supplies.

It was probably an easy transition for the two when they decided to start Tailgate Guys. Although there are some similarities between construction management and event planning, the two still had to do a lot of hard work.

Parker said about their first year making Tailgate Guys work:

“It was just two young dudes just getting after it… We bootstrapped everything 100%.”

Initially, the business only served the University of Alabama, where the founders had numerous community connections to draw on. That has changed over the last 10 years, and today Tailgate Guys serve college campuses all over the USA.

Tailgate Guys Was a Great Idea

While Tailgate Guys was a great idea, it wasn’t really original. Parker Duffey was inspired by a local man in Auburn that had a similar business model but on a much smaller scale.

Parker saw that a guy was basically squatting and selling out choice tailgating space at University of Alabama football games, and the idea for Tailgate Guys was born. It does seem like a simple enough business model, but the two young entrepreneurs had a brilliant addition to bring to the table.

Tailgate Guys decided to partner up with the schools and make their business a legit part of the game day. Parker mused:

“That was really our twist-partnering with the schools… It really separated us from anything anyone else was doing.”

Working with the university and team added a level of credibility to their business, which squatters in empty lots just couldn’t match. The idea has been a successful one, and today Tailgate Guys is represented at more than 16 colleges, and NFL venues to boot!

    Tailgating Could Be the Event

Most football tickets aren’t cheap, and many millennials could care less about going to the actual game.

    According to Parker:

“We’re part of a generation where the athletic event somewhat becomes secondary in a lot of ways… We’re drawn to the community aspect of things, where the event around the event is actually the draw and with ride sharing as big as it is people aren’t even driving to games anymore.”

The fact that millennials may have different tailgating tastes probably isn’t a problem for Tailgating Guys.

Given their connections with both college and professional sports, their business can adapt to any kind of sports party culture that emerges from a very different generation.

  • 23-Year-Old Millionaire Jane Park Seeks a Boyfriend – Salary $75K a Year

    23-Year-Old Millionaire Jane Park Seeks a Boyfriend – Salary $75K a Year

It seems like everyone wants to strike it rich. For 23-year-old millionaire lottery winner Jane Park, her small fortune has been a real problem for her love life.

Jane Park won a £1 million prize in the transnational EuroMillions lottery, which made her the UK’s youngest lottery winner. It also created some headaches for the 17-year-old, who’s having a hard time making solid connections with the opposite sex.

Her big win was back in 2013, and she has been striking out in the love game ever since.

According to an anonymous source quoted by The Mirror:

“She’s never sure whether she is being loved for herself or for her bank balance… she would rather have the arrangement out in the open. Jane has a tendency to be insecure sometimes and worries about people’s motives.”

Jane Park Will Probably Find a Gaggle of Men

Since she won the EuroMillions lottery Jane Park has landed some choice boyfriends. She’s been involved with both footballer Jordan Piggott and “The X Factor” finalist Sam Callahan, though neither relationship worked out.

Now she’s offering lucky young men the chance to interview to be her new boyfriend. The prospective boyfriends will apply for a relationship on a website, and once they make the short list, Jane will be recording live interviews for an upcoming documentary.

The lucky new boyfriend will also be given an “allowance” of £60,000 per year so that Jane can ensure they stay “loyal” to her.

    The Mirror reported that:

“She is willing to pay the right price for someone loyal… Loyalty is the most important thing to her – the money is a small price to pay.”

Who Says Money Can’t Buy You Love?

Clearly, Jane Park is looking for a steady relationship. The fact that she would pay nearly $80,000 USD yearly for “loyalty” shows how badly she wants to find trust with another person.

While we can be optimistic that she will find the perfect match, she is just as likely to encounter men who want to get paid to be with her. Publicly offering a monthly stipend to men to be your boyfriend will totally attract people, but they may not be the kind that will make great husbands.

    The Curse of Easy Money

Jane Park isn’t the first person to win the lottery, and have personal problems as a result.

Lara and Roger Griffiths also won a decent amount of money back in 2005, and it destroyed their marriage. The couple reported having a happy marriage prior the $2.76 million lottery win.

Everything seemed to change after they won the prize. By the time it was all said and done, their (underinsured) house had burned down, and Roger blew out of town in the Porsche they had bought after Lara grilled him about possibly adulterous emails she found.

While the formerly happy couple did probably have a blast traveling and spending their money, it all fell apart in the end. They had been married for 14 years by the time Roger left, which would’ve probably never happened if they hadn’t won that money.

Let’s all hope that Jane Park has a better time with her new boyfriend hunt!

  • Somaya Reece Shares Secrets on How to Make Millions, Shed Pounds

Somaya Reece Shares Secrets on How to Make Millions, Shed Pounds

Somaya Reece has done what most people can only dream about. She built up a marketing presence via MySpace and turned the hype into a successful career in music and entertainment. Recently she launched a popular detox tea, which is meant to help people clean out their bodies and feel better.

There have been numerous detox teas hitting the market over the last few years. People want to lose weight and feel good. Somaya Reece used the tea that she markets to go from a size 18 to a size 6, which has given her brand a lot of credibility.

Somaya Reece Hit the Ground Running

Launching a new product isn’t easy. Somaya Reece had a better start than many, given her existing fan base. She only needed $500 USD to begin selling Get Slim Detox Tea. It was an instant hit, and her mother and sister had to help her keep up with the initial orders!

According to a recent interview with Forbes, Somaya Reece used an old family recipe for Get Slim Detox Tea. She feels that the emotional connection that her fans have with her weight-loss has been a big benefit to her brand.

    Somaya Reece told Forbes:

“I offer a personal experience and story attached to my brand. Unlike other brands, I have a personal relationship with my customers. They can always contact me and ask questions that I am happy to answer.”

Accessibility is a big deal for a brand that rely on results to gain traction. In addition to drinking Get Slim Detox Tea, Somaya Reece began walking for 10 minutes a day, and drinking smoothies to prepare for her weight-loss program.

    Part of a Healthy Lifestyle

Taking exercise is a common trait among millionaires. Somaya Reece is currently worth $4 million USD, and her detox tea business is reportedly doing around $2.5 million USD a year in revenue.

    Somaya Reece says:

“Detoxing helps cleanse, rid your body of toxins hidden and impacted fecal matter that causes disease, fatigue, depression among other issues. In turn this helps you feel lighter, promotes weight loss, and helps give you a tremendous amount of energy.”

Many wealthy people rely on their energy to be more productive than normal people, who don’t care as much about their bodies. The habits that create wealth include keeping an eye on diet and making sure that there is time for fitness.

    The Real Deal

There are a lot of brands out there that pay models or athletes to endorse their product, even though the endorser has little or nothing to do with the product they’re plugging.

Somaya Reece is definitely on a different path when it comes to brand identity.

    She says:

“We [Get Slim Detox Tea] only use real customer reviews and results. I pride my company with using actual customer results as opposed to paying influencer models that are not exactly interested in fitness. I want potential customers to be able to hear and read the stories of actual customers they can relate to.”

She also warns entrepreneurs against short-term thinking. Many startups look for a quick path to easy money, but according to Somaya Reece, this is a big mistake. Instead, entrepreneurs need to have passion and do their homework.

Building up credibility and a following can take a lot of effort, but it also helps to bring a product to market in a remarkably short amount of time. At least that was the case for Get Slim Detox Tea and Somaya Reece.

  • Will Money Motivate Kevin Durant into Taking a $221-Million Contract?

Will Money Motivate Kevin Durant into Taking a $221-Million Contract?

Money may not be the most important thing for Kevin Durant. For the moment, the NBA superstar is playing for the Golden State Warriors. That could change as early as next year.

Kevin Durant is going to be a free agent again, which opens up some questions about what really motivates that 10th highest paid player in the NBA.

The last time Kevin Durant was a free agent, some strange things happened.

He decided to defect from the Oklahoma City Thunder for a shot to post some big numbers out West. While his move to the Golden State Warriors wasn’t without controversy, it has netted him two NBA championships in the process.

Kevin Durant May Opt for Glory

After the 2017 season, Kevin had the chance to exercise a player option in his two-year, $54.3 million USD contract with the Golden State Warriors. He declined and became an unrestricted free agent instead.

Curiously, he then signed on with the Warriors for another year, at a salary which was less than the maximum possible.

Taking less money might not make sense from a business perspective, but it allowed the Warriors to pick up a few other free agents, and retain the bench that made the 2017 championship possible.

It could be argued that Kevin Durant’s willingness to take a lower salary was motivated by his desire for another shot at a championship. Also, he makes more than $30 million USD a year once all his endorsement deals are factored in.

There may be more than money on Kevin Durant’s mind, which makes his upcoming free agent status interesting, to say the least.

    No Shortage of Options

No matter where Kevin Durant goes, he will be getting a pile of cash.

When he opts out of his current deal next summer he will probably be looking at a 5-year, $221 million Supermax offer from the Golden State Warriors, or a 4-year, $164 million from pretty much any other NBA team.

The key factor for Kevin Durant may have a lot more to do with winning another championship. He has already put together an impressive set of career stats, and another NBA championship would just add to his outstanding record.

It is anyone’s guess what team Kevin Durant sees as a viable contender for another championship. Most teams in the NBA would probably welcome him with open arms, despite his stratospheric price tag.

    The Drama Is Here

Kevin Durant’s upcoming free-agency is already causing some problems for the Warriors. According to reports, Draymond Green was suspended from the team because of his unprofessional conduct yesterday.

What started as an on-court disagreement between Durant and Green, turned into a full-blown locker-room blowout. Apparently, Green let Durant have it over the potential he might leave the Warriors, among other things.

Warriors guard Shaun Livingston commented on the explosion after the game:

“Team spirit. Guys wanted a different outcome than what happened. Obviously, Dray had the turnover, guys might have thought they were open or wanted the basketball, didn’t get it. Things happen like that in sports. But it was good to see some fire, some emotion.”

If Kevin Durant decides to walk away from a 5-year, $221 million USD deal with the Warriors, there could be a lot more “emotion” on the Warriors’ side of the court next year.

  • NFL Rams Andrew Whitworth Donates Paycheck to Thousand Oaks Victims

NFL Rams Andrew Whitworth Donates Paycheck to Thousand Oaks Victims

The recent Thousand Oaks shooting was a tragedy. Rams captain and starting left tackle Andrew Whitworth decided to reach out to the community he calls home. According to Jay Glazer at The Athletic, Andrew Whitworth will be donating his week 10 game check to:

“help the families and victims of the shooting.”

The average NFL player makes around $2 million USD per year. As a 13-year veteran of the NFL, Andrew Whitworth was able to ask for a bit more than that. He signed a 3-year, $36 million USD contract with the Rams in 2017, which breaks down to around $60,000 USD per game.

His donation is meaningful and shows that people who have made good in life aren’t afraid to give back. While no amount of money will bring solace to those who lost friends and family in the tragic shooting in Thousand Oaks, it does show that there is good in the world too.

Andrew Whitworth Sets a Great Example

There’s no getting away from the harshness of life. As the Thousand Oaks shooting demonstrates, there are people out there who don’t care at all for others. While the circumstances are terrible, they do allow leaders like Andrew Whitworth to show the world what giving can do in the wake of a tragedy.

Andrew Whitworth isn’t alone in the NFL when it comes to giving. Earlier this year when Hurricane Florence ripped through the East Coast of the USA, Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper stepped in to help the community.

The Carolina Panthers decided to donate more than $1 million dollars in aid, including a $1 million dollar donation to the Red Cross. They also worked directly with the affected areas and helped high school athletic programs which were damaged by the storm.

No one forced Andrew Whitworth or David Tepper to give. They both did the right thing and shared with people who suffered losses from circumstances beyond their control.

    Giving Helps

It’s easy to say that giving $60,000 USD away is easy for someone like Andrew Whitworth. He has a pile of cash compared to most people, and more coming in all the time.

However, he has to work hard for that money. Andrew Whitworth has spent his life honing a skill to the point that he is one of the top NFL players. Most players in the NFL last three seasons, he has gone on for 13.

    Pretty impressive, no?

The simple fact is that while it’s easy to overlook giving and charity, it’s much harder to make a difference for the better. Even if you don’t have tens of thousands to give, there is always a way to do some good in the world.

Small amounts of money add up, and most charitable organizations will accept volunteers.

If you have time or money to give, consider yourself lucky, and look for a good way to share your luck with those who aren’t as fortunate as you at the moment.

  • Super-Powered Spiderman Creator Stan Lee Dies at 95

Super-Powered Spiderman Creator Stan Lee Dies at 95

After a long fight with declining health, and some rough personal circumstances, Stan Lee who had a net worth of $50 million has died at age 95. He recently told The Daily Beast that he wished:

“That I leave everyone happy when I leave.”

Now that he has passed on, let’s look at all the things he left behind that still create joy for people all over the world.

    Stan Lee’s Amazing Spiderman

Spiderman has become a cultural institution and major Hollywood movie franchise. Stan Lee and co-creator Jack Kirby came up with the character back in the early 1960’s and developed the now famous web-slinger over the following decades at Marvel Comics.

Peter Parker grew from a geeky teenager, into the role he has today. Stan Lee gave a generation of young people a new kind of hero that didn’t fit into the comic book hero model that was popular at the time.

Unlike heroes from the DC universe, Peter Parker was young, unsure of himself, and very much at the mercy of the world. This approach to comic book storytelling proved very popular. Spiderman became popular with readers and emerged into his own series.

The character and plot line was adapted into numerous formats beginning in the 1970s. Spiderman was featured on US television, and even adapted for the Japanese market in a serial referred to as, “Supaidā-Man”.

In modern times Spiderman is still wildly popular. Numerous movies have been produced over the last 20 years, with the most recent one starring Tom Holland as Spider-Man.

    The X-Men

While they might be better labeled “The X-People” in today’s politically correct climate, the X-Men were a revolutionary idea at the time Stan Lee helped create them. Jack Kirby is credited with co-creating the X-Men as well.

Like Spiderman, the origins of the X-Men stretch back a half-century.

At the time they were created, the X-Men were a serious anomaly in the comic book scene. For one thing, the whole team was from all over the world. Cyclops was from the USA, but the other members were from Europe, Africa and other far-flung places, including the Soviet Union.

Stan Lee was a major proponent of tolerance and acceptance, and a bitter opponent of racism.

These ideals were written into many of his works, and play a role in how the plot line from the X-Men developed. Today racial equality is taken for granted in most places, but it took people like Stan Lee to stand up for ideas that needed to enter the public mind.

    The Incredible Hulk

Dr. Robert Bruce Banner was another unlikely superhero that is just dripping in ethical nuances. Changed by gamma radiation into a creature that is giant, green, and has a strange way of doing the right thing, the Hulk was a major media success for Stan Lee.

Unlike some of the other characters that Stan Lee helped to create, the Hulk jumped off the page and onto TV screens as early as the 1970s. The concept has was also made into popular motion pictures recently, with Edward Norton playing the Hulk in the 2008 version.

    Other Adventures

Stan Lee was also instrumental in creating The Fantastic Four, The Avengers and a host of heroes and villains that still command the respect of media producers.

His narratives have traveled around the world for decades, and will probably be reimagined for a long time to come. While he will surely be missed, Stan Lee wanted us to be happy. Let’s all do our best to honor his wishes!

  • NBA Players Splurge on Some Pretty Amazing Stuff

NBA Players Splurge on Some Pretty Amazing Stuff

The average NBA salary is more than $7 million USD per year. All that money allows NBA players to indulge their tastes to a degree that’s impossible for most people. Some of their purchases can be a little odd, and others seem downright idiotic in retrospect.

There also seems to be a propensity towards overspending which comes with a big salary. Many professional athletes end up taking a beating on purchases that seem like a good idea at first, but end up costing them a pile when they go wrong!

    Gilbert Arenas’ Shark Tank

Gilbert Arenas had quite a go in the NBA. In 2008 he signed a $111-million-dollar, six-year contract with the Washington Wizards, though his tenure there would be cut short.

He was convicted of keeping an unloaded firearm in the locker room and had to do a bit of probation as a result. The pistol was also apparently unregistered. Some of his fellow teammates were carrying guns illegally and had to pay the price alongside Gilbert Arenas.

After he transferred to the Orlando Magic, he decided to install a shark tank in his home that cost more than a half-million dollars up-front, and around six and a half thousand dollars a month to maintain.

    shark tank
    Source: Business Insider

Gilbert Arenas didn’t last long in Florida either and had to sell the house and the shark tank when he left to play in Memphis in 2012.

    Scottie Pippen’s Jet

Scottie Pippen is a legend. If he hadn’t been playing next to Jordan, he may have been an even bigger star.

Michael Jordan’s massive shadow aside, Scottie Pippen was one of the most powerful NBA players of the 1990s. He was also a member of the fabled 1992 Olympic “Dream Team,” which destroyed any other country by an average of 44 points.

In the world of aeronautics, Scottie Pippen was somewhat less successful.

According to reports, the NBA mega-star tried to save money by buying a fixer-upper private jet. Buying something that doesn’t work with the hope it can be fixed is always a little risky.

In this case, Scottie Pippen pumped at least $5 million USD into a plane that never took off again, and probably couldn’t be sold for much afterward.

    The SuperFetish

It’s easy to understand why NBA players could feel like superheroes. Their athletic ability is amazing, and they often have larger-than-life personalities.

Some NBA players take it to the next level. Shaquille O’Neal is well known for his love of Superman. He has spent unknown amounts of money on Superman-themed items, including $15,000 USD on a Superman bed to sleep in, and more than $40,000 USD to have a Superman grill put on one of his many SUVs.

Danny Granger is more of a Batman fan. He is apparently working on a Batcave.

The details on the Batcave are sparse, but he told the media that:

“Actually the builder called me and told me he found a nice little feature, a lift for my car, kind of like Batman had. It’s in the works, it’s a process. (My interest in superheroes) is just a big thing I’ve been a part of. I love Superman, love Batman. It’s just the way I’ve been always.”

    Eddy Curry’s Dream Life

Living big comes with a heavy price tag.

Eddy Curry has been notorious for spending money on life’s luxuries, including $1,000 USD a month for cable television. He also retained a private chef for around $6,000 USD a month, which is a pretty sweet deal for the chef!

Like all things in life, Eddy Curry’s ability to demand a multi-million dollar salary didn’t last forever. His Chicago home is in foreclosure according to Wikipedia, and his last professional engagement was with the Zhejiang Chouzhou Bank Golden Bulls, back in 2013.

Making $7 million USD a year sounds pretty sweet. If you can’t figure out how to save any of it, the whole thing seems to end in tears. NBA players have an incredible opportunity to get ahead, but few seem to have the skills to make the money last.

  • 220 Central Park South Is Immune From Faltering Manhattan Prices

220 Central Park South Is Immune From Faltering Manhattan Prices

If Sting likes 220 Central Park South in Manhattan, it has to be pretty good. The massive apartment building is nearing completion, and some of the apartment buyers’ names are starting to leak out.

When the project was sold back in 2015 there was a lot of secrecy surrounding the investors, but now it looks like that has all changed.

The Manhattan real estate market isn’t looking great. It’s hard to point to one reason why sales are off. The nascent global economic crunch may be playing a role, and the increased attention of law enforcement authorities could also be a factor.

When the apartments at 220 Central Park South were being marketed, the Manhattan real estate market was booming. September sales were down almost 40% from the same month in 2017, and the prices fell by almost 10%. That isn’t great, but one “country” seems to be in a class of its own.

220 Central Park South Is Rocking It

The buyers at 220 Central Park South are an elite bunch.

People like Andrew Zaro, who is the chairman of Cavalry Portfolio Services signed on to buy in the building. His wife Ofer Yardeni, CEO of Stonehenge Management, is also there, along with hedge-fund manager Ken Griffin who is on the hook for more than $200 million USD worth of apartment space.

Despite the softness in the overall Manhattan real-estate market, according to Donna Olshan of Olshan Realty:

“This building cannot be considered a proxy for the market. It’s its own country.”

The building does have some amazing amenities to offer its jet-set apartment owners. 220 Central Park South was designed by Robert A.M. Stern and features an athletic club, basketball court, golf simulator, as well as a play area for the kids and private dining rooms.

Robert A.M. Stern also designed 15 Central Park West, which has attracted some of the same buyers.

    Changing Market Conditions

Outside of a few bastions of strength, the high-end real estate market isn’t looking so hot. The post-2008 free money party that bailed out the global financial system is in the process of unwinding. That means falling asset values, and higher interest rates.

    Then, there is the graft.

Between 2008 and 2014 around 30% of the apartments in large-scale Manhattan developments were sold to foreigners, or LLC’s. A foreign investor or LLC isn’t inherently a dishonest entity, but many are looking for a way to stash big cash in something secure (especially the LLC crowd).

    Incidentally:

“The Census Bureau estimates that 30 percent of all apartments in the quadrant from 49th to 70th Streets between Fifth and Park are vacant at least 10 months a year.”

The buyers at 220 Central Park South seem to have gotten in on a sweet deal. Given the fact that many of them are hedge-fund and investment managers, it probably shouldn’t be too much of a surprise that is the case. The rest of Manhattan, on the other hand, could be in for a rough couple of years.

    An Uncertain Future Is Here

The boom years were great, but now it looks like the good times have come to a halt. Places like Hong Kong, London and Manhattan are beginning to see cracks in their real estate markets, which could get worse as the US-led trade war starts to bite hard.

Reddit Co-Founder Alexis Ohanian Warns Against “Hustle-Porn”

Alexis Ohanian has made his mark on the internet. He started Reddit with fellow University of Virginia student Steve Huffman in 2005, and the, “front page of the internet,” sold a year later to Condé Nast. The exact amount that Alexis received from Condé Nast isn’t known, but he is thought to be worth around $9 million USD.

Clearly, Alexis Ohanian worked pretty hard to make Reddit a reality. He was dealing with some pretty nasty circumstances at the time. His mother had just died from brain cancer, and his long-time girlfriend had been the victim of a serious injury. He thinks that Reddit was his only outlet for his feelings, but it wasn’t necessarily a healthy direction for him.

Alexis Ohanian Says Don’t “Succumb to Hustle Porn”

According to Alexis, there is a lot of bad advice out there for young entrepreneurs. He referred to “hustle porn” at Web Summit as one of the most toxic things that a founder can model themselves after.

Working long hours on a project is taxing. Younger people have big dreams, but they may not realize that grinding out a project for 15+ hours a day won’t necessarily lead to success.

    Alexis told the conference that:

“This idea that unless you are suffering, grinding, working every hour of every day, you’re not working hard enough… This is one of the most toxic, dangerous things in tech right now.”

It isn’t difficult to see how founders could become unhealthy as a result of bad work habits. The idea that more work means more success can lead to a burn-out or severe physical consequences.

Healthy people rarely work long hours on a regular basis, which should be a wake-up call for founders who are throwing themselves into their project without regard for their health.

    “Such Utter Bulls**t”

Apparently, Alexis Ohanian has strong feelings about startup founders and unhealthy work habits. He described taxing yourself on a project as:

“It’s such bulls**t, such utter bulls**t. It has deleterious effects not just on your business but on your wellbeing.”

It’s easy to forget that your project may not be a big hit. For every Reddit that makes its founders millionaires, there are numerous startups that end up going nowhere. Positivity is important, but getting paid for your time is also vital for a person’s professional success.

Bridging the gap between passion and profit isn’t easy, and massive amounts of work probably aren’t going to lead to happiness of any kind in the long-term. Alexis tells young founders:

“When you’re struggling, talk to someone. It can be a professional, a family member, or even a stranger can be helpful in getting you into a better headspace.”

    Keep Healthy, Be Happy

Mental health is sometimes a scary phrase in the professional world, but many people struggle to find happiness in their work. Physical health is equally important, if not more so.

Most millionaires or billionaires will tell you that keeping a healthy work/life balance is vital, which is worth keeping in mind if you are feeling stressed because of work.

Physical exercise can also be a big benefit to professionals, especially people who do jobs that don’t require a lot of physical work. Keeping fit makes a person’s overall energy rise, which will help anyone to perform better.

It seems like the truly successful people out there don’t push themselves to the brink, which is probably something we can all learn from.
